    Randolph (1773-1833) served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1799-1813, 1815-1817, 1819-1825, and 1827-1829, and in the U.S. Senate, 1825-1827, "except during [his fellow Virginian] Jefferson's first term, as a public man he was always a member of the opposition, a constitutional purist, an unsparing critic, and a merciless castigator of iniquity, which sometimes he imagined."
