Up for sale is a very interesting book that contains an autobiographical journal maintained by an early Mormon pioneer who was a very important figure in both Utah and Arizona.

With black and white photos and plates, some of which appear to have been individually pasted in place.  Of particular interest is a plate that has small individual photos of Smith's five wives and almost all of his 44 children.
Jesse Nathaniel Smith was born in 1834 in Stockholm, New York.  He was a first cousin to the Prophet Joseph Smith.  In 1847, he crossed the Great Plains with the Mormon pioneers arriving in the Salt Lake Valley.  By the age of 26, he had been a city clerk, councilman, mayor, and magistrate for the town of Parowan, a district attorney for Iron County, a militia Captain, a member of the Utah territorial legislature, and a member of the Parowan Stake presidency.  In 1860, he was called on a mission to Denmark and twice presided over the Scandinavian mission.  In 1878, he became a colonizer of Arizona and was instrumental in securing property and water rights for the communities of Snowflake, Taylor, and Woodruff.  He became a successful farmer and banker and served as a probate judge and in the Arizona territorial legislature.  He was the first President of the Eastern Arizona Stake from 1879 to 1887 and was the President of the Snowflake Stake from 1887 until his death in 1906.  Smith was called by the Church leaders to become a patriarch and practiced plural marriage.  He had five wives and sired 44 children.  By the time this book was first published, the Family Association estimated that he had more than 6,000 descendants!
This book would be a great resource for genealogists but would also, in my opinion, be a very interesting read for anyone wanting to know more about the experience of the Mormon pioneers, as recounted by an actual participant.
