Established in 1780,
Sullivan
County
was one of the earliest settled areas in
Tennessee
. In 1761 troops on their way to aid besieged
Fort
Loudoun
passed through this area of northeast
Tennessee
, built the
Island Road
, and constructed
Fort
Robinson
on the Long Island of the
Holston
. Settlement
of the area began shortly after the fort was constructed. The first permanent settlers came from
Lancaster
,
Pennsylvania
, in 1765. This area was known
as the North of the Holston Settlement and was considered part of
Virginia
until a boundary survey proved it to be part of
North Carolina
in 1779.
The
county
of
Sullivan
, named for General John Sullivan, a New Hampshire Revolutionary War leader, was officially organized in February 1780.
Oliver Taylor's book remains the single most important work on the history of Sullivan County,
Tennessee
.
The first nineteen chapters deal with early activities in the
Holston
Valley
, starting with the Cherokee settlements.
Taylor
records the history
of the area with a sympathetic account of the Cherokee's plight. At the same time he tells of the brave frontier men and women and their
constant battles with the Indians, recording the hardship of early citizens such as John Donelson and those who made the perilous river voyage
with him. He tells of Isaac Shelby and the Wataugans, as they tried to subdue the
Holston
Valley
wilderness, and the unconquerable spirit of
those who attempted to start the State of
Franklin
.
His admiration for East Tennessee's early pioneers is evident, and he has scattered biographies of the
Sullivan
County
"Makers of History"
throughout the book. Biographies include John Adair, Joseph Anderson, Wm. Blount, George Caldwell, W. Claiborne, Elkanah Dulanry, Edmund
Gaines, Nathan Gregg, Joseph Ketron, James King, Joseph Martin, George McClellen, John Netherland, John Rhea, John Smith, John Sullivan,
James Tadlock, and Nancy Ward.
Included in the latter half of this volume are chapters devoted to early industry, the church, agriculture, methods of travel and message
transmission (including early post offices), the newspaper and politics, and some interesting "Odds and Ends".
