Planning a Motive Power Program.
The locomotive stud of your model railroad deserves serious consideration even if you can only contemplate one locomotive for the near future. Sooner or later you will have more than that one, and even buying the one will be more fun if you fit it into a well thought out plan covering all the future motive power needs of your road.
Planning this locomotive program is fun in itself. Of course you don't go about it as a real railroad does, always looking into the future. You can go backwards too. Your model locomotive stud can include locos of 1910 vintage acquired in 1938, and this only adds to the intrigue of the job.
The trick is to not only provide for hauling all classes of available business at any stage of the road's development, but also to provide for it with locos that belong together. At the outset you may limit your road to freight service only. This will simplify the locomotive problem, as one light freight engine can serve on the road as well as do the switching. This one locomotive can be a Consolidation or light Mikado.
Or, if you start off with both freight and passenger, you may elect to start with a Ten-Wheeler or a low driver Pacific. These small dual service locomotives should not be too numerous on your road, however, unless special conditions justify it. As you add power there'll be more and more need for specialized engines for various classes of service. After two or three road engines, you'll of course need a switcher. You may need high wheeled Atlantics or Pacifies or Hudsons to handle your fast passenger traffic and low wheeled Mikes or Berkshires for the through freight drags. As your road grows you may find it necessary to add big, powerful dual service locomotives of the 4-8-4 type.
