    Illustrated Book
Mackinac County was the first settled by white people in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. "The Upper Peninsula, its islands, rivers and lakes are phenomenal; so much so, that the more they are seen the more they puzzle and mystify."
Early days in Mackinac County, Michigan, are recalled in this new 53-page booklet titled:
    Mackinac County, Michigan, USA
The spiral-bound booklet includes excerpts from two hard to find sources: the 1883
History of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
    and
Michigan, a Guide to the Wolverine State
, a 1941 product of the WPA Writer's Program. The tri-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 8.5" x 11" paper.
    Among the subjects included are:
Michilimackinac Company; Question of the County Seat; the New Court House; Circuit Court in 1881; the Press; Mackinac Island; Indian History; Louis Joliet; La Salle, Hennepin and De Tonty; Peter Charlevoix; John Jacob Astor and the American Fur Company; The Mission House; National Park on Mackinac Island; Fort Mackinac; Arch Rock; Fort Holmes and Sugar Loaf; the legend of Robertson's Folly; French, British and American officers (1742-1882); War of 1812; Muster or 1812; the Island Cemetery; Mackinac Village; Churches; Indian Agents; Fisheries; the town of St. Ignace, Father Marquette's death and burial site; Early Settlers; Old Marriage Register from Catholic Church; Other settlements -- Trout Lake Station, Prentis'Bay, Dollarville, Garfield Harbor, Round Island, Lee Chanaux, Scammon's Harbor; Mackinac City on the Lower Peninsula; etc.
In addition to the many names mentioned throughout the booklet, there are a number of biographies. These often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on the events of the day.
The names, arranged by towns, include:
Dr. John R. Baily, James Bennett, Mrs. Minnie Carson, John W. Davis, Benoni Lachance, James Lasley, Michael McNally, William P. Preston, William Sullivan, Capt. Augustus Todd, Jacob A.T. Wendell, Josiah E. Wendell, William S. Allen, C.Y. Bennett, Philip D. Bissell, William J. Brown, Felix Codieux, Henry Comstock, Thomas L. Everett, Christopher Faut, Henry Gibson, Alfred J. Smyth Jr., Dr. Albert H. Steinbrecher
, William J. Trotman, Amos M. Withrow, Mrs. J.H. Andrews, Mrs. E.C. Campbell, F.R. Day, and George Gane.
This booklet includes 18 pages of excerpts from the WPA book, including a section on the Mackinac Island and a section on St. Ignace.  Although perhaps out of date as a tour book, these WPA guides are rich in history and trivia.
Wouldn't this make a unique gift?
