A law enacted 1642 required the town clerk to record births.
A law enacted 1716 required the town clerk to record marriages.
Town records for 1686-1726 are missing, supposedly destroyed by fire.
    Existing church records begin 1708.
The first birth recorded was Joseph Waters, in April 1647.
The first death was Rachel Waters, in March 1649.
    The first marriage in
    Lancaster
    was Jonas Fairbank and
    Lydia
    Prescott, in May 1658.
The oldest town book containing continuous registry began 1726. Many earlier dates were
    inserted by the clerks, probably
    derived from family memorials.
