    Description

    All of the traditional
    jangada
or primative fishing raft components here are handmade: from the mast to the sail, the ropes to the sailing seat, fishing nets, fishing hooks, anchors, and utensils to keep fish and belongings.
In the jangada, there is a graceful, almost parabolic curve on the upper part of the triangle sail, and another one more extended and short, below. This asymmetry is due to the deft manipulation of the mast, which turns gently around its axis.
The traditional jangada doesn't have any metallic elements like nails; its structure is completely put together with tree trunks with joints and lashings using ropes made of hand-woven fibers. There is a sail bench of wood and ropes fastened to the trunks. It has a deep groove where the mast is fitted. There is a reinforced board transversally fixed to the hull presenting five circular holes (included in this model) which serve as slots for the base of the mast. They correspond to the various positions the sail must occupy for proper navigation. There is a bowline which is a removable keel which can be dipped into the water according to the needs of navigation and wind direction. All the utensils are hung (seen here) which are necessary for the daily routine of fishing. The lateen sail is triangular with curved sides, made of rough cotton cloth and trimmed with ropes. Utensils and provisions are carved of balsa. There is a storage container to keep fish that are caught; a steering rudder; a round wicker basket to hold the catch; a bowl to wet the sail with seawater; a stone anchor; a hearth for cooking beans, rice and fish. Finally, there are 2 log rollers that support the raft while it sits on the beach. The rollers enable the fishermen to quickly roll it into the sea when the wind is right. This is a model of a primitive style of sailing raft that is fast disappearing from the Northeast coast of Brazil being replaced by a machine made one of Styrofoam.
