    Early days in Hot Spring
    County, AR,
are recalled in this spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts from Goodspeed's
Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Pulaski, Jefferson, Lonoke, Faulkner, Grant, Saline, Perry, Garland and Hot Spring Counties, Arkansas
    (1886), and from
Arkansas, A Guide to the State,
    a 1941 WPA publication. The
    52-page booklet
is printed on quality paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover.
The first part of the booklet contains a brief history of the county: Physical Characteristics; Agriculture; Trappers, hunters, refugees from justice, squatters and other early settlers; Principal county officers (1830 to 1886), Civil War days; the county seat, Malvern -- businesses, professions, etc.; Public buildings;  etc.
Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities. In the course of this they often shed light on the early businesses, professions and institutions in the county. The biographies include: Judge Joseph H. Alexander, Capt. J.W. Bailey, James G. Baker, Daniel N. Berry, Joseph Brown, James Alfred Brumbelow, Andrew Jackson Chandler, Hiram Jackson Clift, T.H. Cloud, W.H. Collie, Judge Alphonzo Curl, Milton Davis, N.W. Denty, John W. Dorman, Joseph H. Downey, W.W. Dutton, John W. Easley, Samuel Alexander Emerson (including an extensive account of his military experiences), George L. Erwin, George M. Floyd, Moses P. Goodman, James R. Harrison, J.M. Henry, B. Hodges, Thomas Holt, C.B. Horn, Love Johnson, John W. Keith, Hodge Kimzey, John Henry Lecroy, William D. Leiper, Judge Hugh McCallum, David A. McCollough, John J. Miles, Dr. W.T. Morehead, John Morrison, Oliver H.P. Norwood, Col. William H. Orr, Dr. S. Reamy, Garner M. Russell, William Stanley, Levi Stone, Dr. Robert M. Thrasher, V.M. Threlkeld, Enoch H. Vance Jr., Charles C. Vantrease, Seaborn Walters, Henry Clay Ward, John Randolph Wisdom, and J. G. Woods.
The WPA section includes a small map of the area, and tour stops at Malvern, Butterfield, Magnet, Magnet Cove, Cook Mountain and Lake Catherine. WPA tours are not your traditional tour guides, but are filled with bits of history and trivia, and in the case of Malvern, a tale of courteous bandits, including the James brothers.
