    Halifax County, VA
Early days in the Halifax County, Virginia, area are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this book, comprised of excerpts from two early books:
    Halifax County Virginia, a Handbook
    by Alfred Morrison, and
Virginia, a Guide to the Old Dominion
, a WPA Writer's Program publication. The 52-page spiral-bound book is printed on 8 1/2 x 11" 60# paper. The colorful front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet.
The excerpt from the Morrison book takes a 1907 look at the area, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes and sightseeing possibilities.
    Among the subjects included are:
names of 1907 county officials, physical characterists, effects of the Civil War on the land, the four towns of the county in 1907 -- Houston (now called Halifax), South Boston, Virgilina and Clover; Magisterial districts; Various businesses, such as the Barbour Buggy Company, the Boston Manufacturing Company, Century Cotton Mills and others; a list of "the busiest men in the neighborhood", Churches and Schools, Minerals and Mineral Waters; Water power; Statistics and Laws; Newspapers; History of the county in various periods, with many names mentioned, and numerous other bits of history and trivia.
