Not the work of one person, this history was compiled by members of the Thronateeska Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. As such, it presents the history of the area from a variety of vantage points being taken, in part, from the journals and memories of the people involved in the formation and development of this community. Named for Athens jurist, Charles Dougherty, the county was created in 1853 from a portion of Baker County which had been laid out from Early County in 1825. Here are interwoven names and stories from the earliest days of Dougherty County until well into the twentieth century. The text covers the cultural, political, religious, and economic events and trends through the years. It is full of descriptions of life in Dougherty in the various eras of its history. Subject matter ranges from histories of the cities and towns of the county to a history of the Jewish community in Albany. Organizations, both past and present, economic institutions, military history, and agriculture are all featured. Military rolls from the Civil, Spanish-American, and First World War are included. There is an abundant amount of genealogical data to be gleaned from this book. A name index prepared for this reprint edition facilitates use of the volume.
