Carioca Cooler Advertising Corkscrew Pencil Bottle Opener Puerto Rican Rum 1938

Description

This is a combination corkscrew & mechanical pencil patented by Walter Ruby in 1938. It advertises Carioca Cooler rum/cola/lime drink. A sturdy and useful, multi-purpose, tavern trade advertising specialty from way back, for Rum Carioca, Puerto Rico. The mechanical pencil barrel has a bottle opening hanging hook that can be pulled out to reveal a corkscrew.
Copy on the barrel reads: "Suggest the Carioca Cooler | (Cuba Libre plus Lime) | Made Only With COCA-COLA, LIME and RUM CARIOCA 86 Proof | Serve in 10 oz. Collins Glass - Plenty Ice | CIA RON CARIOCA DESTILERIA, Inc. | San Juan, Puerto Rico | Pat. Pend."
Barrel has wear and the message has faded some. Nickel plated bottle opener has pitting and some rust. Holds a short length of 0.7 pencil lead, advances and retracts. Measures 5
