    Description

    1965 Toyota Land Cruiser.
This Land Cruiser FJ40 was bought by the original owner in 1964 in the Central Valley and has always been a California FJ40. The owner's friends took it from him one day and, like an episode of 'Overhauling', they had it repainted, reupholstered, and the motor replaced with a Chevy V8.
Another friend helped them to sell it during the beginning of pandemic when they were no longer driving. I went to check it out and found the car to be in amazing condition. Though it hadn't been on the road in a while, regular starts kept it decent and it took only a jump and some fresh gas to fire up.
I had it towed down to San Francisco straight to my mechanic. Fluids were replaced as were spark plugs, battery and fuel pump. Minor adjustments were done to the carb. The car fires up and roars to life without fail. Gas, brakes and clutch are all tight and responsive. Steering is the same--no slop, tracks straight, tight turns.. The suspension is sound and dialed-in. Not too soft or stiff. I believe it is stock height. Shifts are smooth and all the gears work as they should.
Our intention was to get it all dialed in and ship it to Maine for use as our beach car. Instead, with covid, we changed directions and installed a pool in the yard instead. (One luxury at a time!)
I couldn't speak at length with the original owner--old age had caught up, sadly. But the condition of the FJ is evidence that it was well loved and cared for. Neither the body or frame has any rust. There is no evidence of bondo or accident damage. The repaint appears to have been part of a full body-off restoration. There is no overspray on any other parts of the truck. It appears wires were re-run. The interior is also rust-free and appears to never have been patched. The paint continues under the hood and into the interior. Interior carpet is in good condition.
Mechanically, the swap seems to have been done professionally. it was supposed to be a new motor, not used or tired, and by feel, it seems quite true. Driving is a visceral experience, like the FJ40 is an extension of your own synapses.
Included in the sale is the rear-passenger seat.It is in the same condition as the fronts.
Since I did put the car in my name, it's not technically a one-owner vehicle anymore. But it is better now than when I got it. Whoever buys this beauty will have a fantastic FJ40 that's going to be super pleasing to own, and should appreciate in value in the near future!
